Given the lack of training I had, I felt I did fine, but the lack of communication, lack of feedback, lack of guidance and underlying hostility is not only insulting, but a betrayal to the department's pledge of being a fair and equal workplace. They didnt bother giving any constructive feedback about my work or how I could improve. I had only work for about two weeks when they made the decision. However, my supervisor barely provided the hands-on training I needed for the position. I was told I was enthusiastic but couldnt't multitask. Unexpectedly, I was put off the schedule, told that it was for training and for the Holidays, and I'd be back on schedule in a week. During my time, I asked questions, communicated with my supervisor, and saw where I could work and improve. But, this is a department where people aren't honest and likely talk behind your back. I came to work early and worked hard, doing what I was told and what needed to be done. They don't care about you here, or at the least, you have to fit a very certain mentality and personality for people here to care about you. When I started, I was told You will not fail, we will give you the tools to succeed I was excited.

There’s no incentive to being a loyal experienced hard working employee if anything you will be expected to carrry the entire load while the new hires (I promise you there will be many )do absolutely nothing all day! Management will not even know how bad an employee is because they never come out of the office! Animal attendants are expected to run the entire facility you will clean and care for the animals ( even aggressive cats and dogs with no proper training to do so) you will also be a secretary janitor landscaper security guard and many other delegated tasks that you have no proper training to do but will have no choice because there’s no staff! Don’t expect any help from the higher ranking officials at the health department they could careless about the shelter and it’s staff and will promise to make changes but never follow through! The union is absolutely awful too and will not help with anything so don’t even bother paying dues unless you enjoy throwing away money! You will be forced to commute to the opposite shelter where you don’t know the animals and management will not make any effort to educate you on them leaving you to fend for yourself and hope that u don’t get bit by a dog or attacked by a feral cat! There’s absolutely no growth and no training or compensation for training that will help you do your job better or safer! They will use your love of animals to manipulate you!
